What Acumen Fencing Builds:
Wood Privacy Fence
Posts are set below frost grade and packed with 80-120lbs of concrete, three 2”×4” rails run smoothly with the yard, and 6’ AC2 Treated Southern Yellow Pine Dog Ear Pickets or 6’ Cedar Dog Ear Pickets are nailed on each outside third of the picket to prevent the picket from cupping. Galvanized Ring Shank Nails are used to prevent rust stains and avoid raised nails caused by frost heave.
Gates frames are braced and stiffened to prevent sagging and ensure the gate moves gracefully under its own weight, custom made to the desired opening, and guaranteed to open to allow access to the full desired width of the opening.
Privacy fences offer classic appeal and Acumen Fencing builds them to last. Longevity upgrades are available as well. Post caps and a moisture barrier at ground level mitigate the oxidation, and resulting degradation, that occurs when wood is regularly exposed to water.
Wood Privacy Walls & Privacy Screens
Partitioning a space adds a dimension of privacy which enhances the function of your space.
A partition can be placed around any outdoor space to offer privacy, and protection from the elements. They can block the predominant wind direction, improving the cold weather experience of your fire pit or hot tub, or they can cast shade over a deck that is too hot to walk on in the middle of the day.
Wood Picket Fence
Picket fences lend an architectural voice to your home. With different shapes, designs, colors, archways, and openings to choose from, the tone is wholly customizable.
Create that cottage garden in your front yard. Match a gothic roof, or color pallet, with French gothic pickets. Achieve a modern look with the strong & clean lines of horizontal pickets. All offered with your desired amount of wood joinery to ensure that the standard expected of your desired architectural style is realized.

Wooden Fence Maintenance Services:
Fence Staining
Staining a new or freshly restored fence elevates the fence to finished product ready to withstand its time in the elements.
Acumen Fencing uses oil based stains with a transparency level that complements the condition of the fence. Oil based stain does not peel or crack, which helps the fence age well, and reduces the labor necessary for future applications— giving your fence the best chance to look its best over the course of its life.
Wood Fence Restoration Services
Structurally sound but grey fences are the prime candidate for restoration services. With the application of a chemical brightener one can return a natural wood tone to a grey fence with very little environmental impact. The primary ingredient in wood brighteners is also primary ingredient in Bar Keepers Friend, a common cleaning agent in restaurants and households.
Restoration prepares an ideal surface for for the application of a semi-transparent stain. When the services are paired together, they restore the vibrancy to your space.

Southern Yellow Pine pickets with a Cedar or Oak stain is an excellent way to create a durable and aesthetically pleasing fence in a cost effective way. Good Southern Yellow Pine is resinous, strong, and very rot resistant. These qualities paired with the UV and moisture protection provided by the stain & sealer make a fence that will look great and last for decades with regular maintenance.

By working as the single owner/employee of the business, and exclusively with the creation and maintenance of wood products, I am able to minimize the costs passed onto the client.
Working alone minimizes the total number of jobs the business needs to complete each year. I've found I'm efficient enough at building a fence without heavy equipment that even though my total labor hours are higher than a well practiced crew using heavy equipment, I can still offer a lower price because of the reduction in overhead costs gained by needing fewer jobs per year, narrowing my product offerings, and by offering complementary services.
My hope is that this business structure will encourage people to access fence construction and maintenance who previously believed it to be too cumbersome or expensive.

Wood sealer & stain compensate for the conditions the fence is required to weather. Wood lasts hundreds of years if totally submerged in water or kept totally dry and protected from insects, but fences are required to withstand the elements. Exposure to moisture and oxygen causes wood to oxidize and degrade. Sealer protects from moisture. UV damage leads to gray and brittle pickets. The stain provides protection from UV damage.
The stain & sealer used by Acumen Fencing has been selected to minimize the prep time required for future applications. This gives the fence the best chance at being maintained over its lifespan because it reduces the labor of the maintenance-- which translates to comfort if you're doing it yourself and money that stays in your pocket if you hire someone.
-
This will depend on the product used and the conditions specific to your home. Products used by Acumen Fencing in high exposure areas may need stain applied every 3 years whereas a dry and sun protected fence may only need stained every 5 years based on statements from the manufacturer.
To tell if your fence needs a refreshed application observe whether the color has faded and if water beads on the surface instead of absorbing into the wood. If water is absorbed into the wood and the color faded, a new coat of sealer & stain will enhance the longevity of your fence.
-
If the fence is still structurally sound and any potential repairs are relatively concentrated, it's absolutely worth pursuing a restoration of your fence. Grey and weathered pickets can be chemically brightened, stained, and sealed to improve the longevity of the structure with dramatic effects on appearance for a fraction of the cost of a new fence.
If the grey look is desired, clear sealer can be applied to realize the longevity benefits and retain the weathered appearance.
